Ryclying ideas to steer Space Ship Earth

Is is possible to live off the grid in modern civilization? Imagine a home that is powered by renewable energy, collects its own water, grows its own food, and is made from 100% recycled materials. The architect Mike Reynolds has proved thats is more than imaginable. HE calls his idea and his company Earthship Biotecture. An Earthship is a truly sustainable home designed to collect its own energy, food, and water, and defuse all its waste on site.

Yeah, Cool but can you cook with it? YES

And earth ship will even harvest methane from your waste and turn it into energy. Check out more food for thought on the Earthship site. http://www.earthship.net/

Tsunami

This is quite a picture. Makes you wonder what was going through their mind as they took it.

This is a fantastic photo!! Amazing that the film was still good - or memory stick. Either one, this really tells the story. Look at how high that wall of water is!!!!!!

½ a second before tsunami

This picture was taken on the banks of Sumatra Island (the height of waves was of approx. 32 m = 105 ft).
It was found saved in a digital camera, 1 ½ years after the disaster.

We cannot know for sure,
but very likely the one who took the picture is not alive any more (it was just a matter of seconds).
Today we can see the last image he/ she saw before ending life on Earth!

SONG

The weight of the world
is love.
Under the burden
of solitude,
under the burden
of dissatisfaction

the weight,
the weight we carry
is love.

Who can deny?
In dreams
it touches
the body,
in thought
constructs
a miracle,
in imagination
anguishes
till born
in human--

looks out of the heart
burning with purity--
for the burden of life
is love,

but we carry the weight
wearily,
and so must rest
in the arms of love
at last,
must rest in the arms
of love.

No rest
without love,
no sleep
without dreams
of love--
be mad or chill
obsessed with angels
or machines,
the final wish
is love
--cannot be bitter,
cannot deny,
cannot withhold
if denied:

the weight is too heavy

--must give
for no return
as thought
is given
in solitude
in all the excellence
of its excess.

The warm bodies
shine together
in the darkness,
the hand moves
to the center
of the flesh,
the skin trembles
in happiness
and the soul comes
joyful to the eye--

yes, yes,
that's what
I wanted,
I always wanted,
I always wanted,
to return
to the body
where I was born.

Lateralus

With my feet upon the ground I move myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin
I'm reachin' up and reachin' out, I'm reachin' for the random or
Whatever will bewilder me, whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind, we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been

This is sort of in response to what has been discussed in dozemay's post below. this to me is whats really really really really really really important.each of us when we open up to whatever you want to call it is being pushed toward good.certain activities certainly catalyze this experience.never doubt your creative intution.its working toward good.its all working toward good

Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind

My biggest struggle these days is denying my intuition because of a system of thought...an operating system you could say...we have the tools to tap into the internet (metaphorically)...they're everywhere...screaming at us

Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come

So, help me save the rainforest guys.... 11.4 sq ft at a time :)

How to Save the Rainforests

This is from a website, www.enn.com, which is good. The things talked about in this article, are not

What the fuck do we do?

what the fuck do we do?

max and i went to see the Loose Change Final Cut at the Oriental last night. first of all, the movie fucking sucked. it was a conglomeration of the evidence pointing towards the likelihood of 911 being an inside job, yet they decided to not take a stand on the issue. they presented the info and fizzled out with a weak and almost apathetic conclusion. while a point can be made for the importance of people making their own inferences, if people are going to travel around the country in order to show these paradigm shattering pieces of information, than they better fucking take a stance and use their media disseminating power to create a community of people who want change. after the movie there was no call to action, no attempt to bring people together...instead a "thanks for coming, buy a beer to support the venue."

i watched Zeitgeist for the second time when i got home because i was searching for a more solid view of the situation at hand and i needed the zeitgeist rhetoric to get under my skin again. that movie is the shit. while it is extreme and unnerving, it takes no prisoners. it is a holistic presentation, it is a call to action, a call to connect, a call to open our collective eyes. the quotes at the end of the movie are amazing, enlightening, positive and serve to bring people together. Ram Dass' quote about the lack of an 'other' is exactly what we need to be hearing: we are in this together and we are inexplicably tied to each other and to nature. Bill Hicks' quote about the dream like nature of life/reality is liberating and brings the end of the movie to a point where an answer begins to become somewhat visible: dream a better reality.

the government perpetrated 9/11 against its citizens in order to further its political agenda of greed and power. the government perpetrated 9/11 against its citizens in order to further its political agenda of greed and power. holy shit. this is huge, this is bigger than anything i've read in a history book. we are living during the craziest explosion of life, information and oppression that i can imagine. what matters? what is going to school, traveling, going to shows, smoking pot, playing? what is our life compromised of when we are embedded in the most elaborate life-strangling lie ever created?

WHAT THE FUCK DO WE DO? WE HAVE TO STAND UP. HOW CAN WE OVERCOME THIS EVIL? HOW DO WE ACCELERATE THE DREAM OF A BETTER EXISTENCE?

I whole-heartedly encourage all of you who haven't seen Zeitgeist to watch it immediately.
This is an amazing article that serves as a necessary grain of salt to accompany the move.

I have no idea how we can overcome this. Positivity is awesome but I need something to sink my teeth into. I need a way to focus my intellect to make a real change. Fuck the slow cycles of oppression. What do we do? Suggestions?

I know we can do this. I'm done participating in the murdering liberty stripping paradigm that is everywhere. It's time to get angry and make a real change in our lives and the lives of others.

EU fines Microsoft record $1.4bn
Windows software

The European Commission has fined US computer giant Microsoft for defying sanctions imposed on it for anti-competitive behaviour.

Microsoft must now pay a record 899m euros ($1.4bn; £680.9m) after it failed to comply with a 2004 ruling that it abused its position.

The ruling said that Microsoft was guilty of not providing key code to rival software makers.

EU regulators said the firm was the first to break an EU anti-trust ruling.

The fines come on top of earlier fines of 280m euros imposed in July 2006, and of 497m euros in March 2004.

"Microsoft was the first company in 50 years of EU competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision," Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.

Future improvements?

An investigation concluded in 2004 that Microsoft was guilty of freezing out rivals in products such as media players, while unfairly linking its Explorer internet browser to its Windows operating system at the expense of rival servers.

The European Court of First Instance upheld this ruling last year, which ordered Microsoft to pay 497m euros for abusing its dominant market position.

DISPUTE TIMELINE
March 2004: EU fines Microsoft 497m euros and orders it to release key Windows code to rival software developers
September 2004: Microsoft tries to have the ruling temporarily suspended
April 2006: Microsoft appeals the ruling in the European Court of First Instance
September 2007: Microsoft loses its appeal

Last week, the firm announced that it would open up the technology of some of its leading software, including Windows, to make it easier to operate with rivals' products.

"As we demonstrated last week with our new interoperability principles and specific actions to increase the openness of our products, we are focusing on steps that will improve things for the future," Microsoft said.

Further cases

But the firm is still being pursued by Brussels.

Last month, the European Commission launched two new anti-competition investigations against Microsoft into similar issues.

The first will look at whether there are still problems regarding Microsoft abusing its dominance of the PC market to grab market share of the internet.

The Commission will also investigate the continued interoperability of Microsoft software with rival products.

have we lost our connection?

When I was learning about evolution in my high school biology class someone posed an interesting question. Have humans stopped evolving because we no longer need to change to fit our environment? This is a thought that reenters my mind at times and I find it to be a valid question. Due to current technology we no longer have a need to adapt to fit our environment, in fact we do exactly the opposite, we change our environment to suit our needs. If the weather were to begin to get drastically colder, there’s no need for our bodies to evolve and start growing fur again to keep us warm, we can simply put on a synthetic jacket if we need to go outside. Otherwise we can sit in our heated houses by the gas fireplace or if we absolutely must go somewhere we can start our cars and let them run for a while to warm up while we wait in the warmth inside. We no longer need to adapt to the changing of the weather and we don’t have to adapt to find food either since we now control our food sources. We plant the crops we need and if there may be a problem with them, science has come up with some chemical we can spray on them to ensure their survival through almost any condition. Same with meat sources, no need to worry about those running out when we can keep thousands of cows stacked upon one another without having to worry about disease because there are plenty of antibiotics to take care of that. It seems like we’ve finally done it, we’ve beaten nature and no longer need to adapt to fit in with nature, we can create our own environment that is much more stable and dependable…But is that really what we want to do? Have we completely lost touch with nature? In a lecture the other day my professor was talking about the hurricane in South East Asia in the 90s that caused a huge tidal wave. He talked about how relatively few animals and indigenous people were harmed, yet thousands of other people died. The indigenous people who still rely heavily on nature for their survival knew how to read the signs that nature was sending and knew they needed to get to higher ground. They also saw that the animals were acting strangely, another sign of trouble. The animals seem to be the most in touch with nature, they can sense shifts in things like atmospheric pressure and know when it’s time to take action in one form or another. On the Titanic people in the lower decks knew which direction to run from the water because it was the direction the rats were running purely on animal instinct. We have these notions that we are a highly sophisticated and advanced society, yet it is the “primitive” indigenous people and animals that have maintained a connection with nature. They seem to have an alliance with nature rather than trying to conquer it. Where would we be without our watches and our weather forecasts and our air conditioning? We have the technology to do all these amazing things, to try and predict tsunamis, earthquakes, blizzards…but what happens if this technology fails us? Think about a power outage, think about the blackouts that happened in New York City that shut down a city and caused massive chaos. Have we lost every natural instinct? Are we connected with the natural environment at all anymore? Or have we become so sure of ourselves and our new ideas in this technological revolution that we’ve lost any connection with mother earth that we once had? While it may seem more advanced to keep all our records electronically rather than carving them into stone, isn’t it a lot easier to erase a hard drive than to wipe clean a carving? These are just some questions I’ve been thinking about lately, unfortunately I don’t have any answers but sometimes it scares me to think how disconnected from the earth we have become and I’m left wondering if we have any chance of reestablishing that connection before it is lost forever.

Brown Ends Tuition for Lower-Income Students

Bridging the gap...one Ivy League University at a time. However, if your family makes 101,000 dollars a year, it looks like your parents have to shell out half that for your tuition. In Australia, higher education is paid for by the government, and as soon as you start making 30,000 dollars a year, you must start paying them back. if you never make 30 grand in a year, you never pay for college. The loophole of course is to travel abroad and make your money there, never filing tax returns in Aussie, never notifying the government that you've been making enough money to help pay for YOUR education. It seems to be a little bit immoral and unproductive, considering the money has to come from somewhere and if nobody ever pays them back, the money would eventually run out. However, who knows how i would handle a situation like that, but either way, a good idea in theory (the pre-paid education, that is...)

Undisclosed detention centers

Since 9/11, and seemingly without the notice of most Americans, the federal government has assumed the authority to institute martial law, arrest a wide swath of dissidents (citizen and noncitizen alike), and detain people without legal or constitutional recourse in the event of "an emergency influx of immigrants in the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs."

Beginning in 1999, the government has entered into a series of single-bid contracts with Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) to build detention camps at undisclosed locations within the United States. The government has also contracted with several companies to build thousands of railcars, some reportedly equipped with shackles, ostensibly to transport detainees.

Using Nuclear Power to Get Gas

Bill Reinert, who helped design Toyota's Prius hybrid, hovers in a helicopter 1,000 feet over Fort McMurray, Alberta.

On this clear November morning, he's craning for a look at one of the world's largest petroleum reserves where there's not an oil well in sight.

Instead, in a two-mile-wide pit below, trucks head to refineries with loads of sand weighing more than Boeing 747s. Yellow flames shoot skyward as 900-degree heat liquefies any embedded petroleum.

Via Cryptogon:

As bad as this seems, this is just a preview.

I could be wrong, but my guess is that asymmetric operations against the energy companies will begin if the insane decision is made to go with nuclear power to provide the heat necessary to recover the oil from these deposits.

There are a lot of people who are one notch away from throwing their bodies onto the gears of the machine. It’s only a fraction of fraction of one percent, but that’s all you need to cause billions of dollars worth of damage in an asymmetric battle space.

It’s tough to imagine a more insane use of technology than using nuclear power to eat the earth in order to keep spewing carbon into the air, but here we are.

$740 billion mortgages at moderate to high risk of failure - Bank of America

WASHINGTON — Over the last two decades, few industries have lobbied more ferociously or effectively than banks to get the government out of its business and to obtain freer rein for “financial innovation.

But as losses from bad mortgages and mortgage-backed securities climb past $200 billion, talk among banking executives for an epic government rescue plan is suddenly coming into fashion.

Dear lord! rioters!! get the water cannons!!

Texas Republicans worked overtime to make it harder for key Democratic voting groups to vote and be represented fairly. The redistricting games they played are infamous. And for the Prairie View A&M University precincts, they put the voting place more than seven miles from the school.

So what did the students in this video do? They shut down the highway as they marched seven miles, chanting Obama, to cast their votes on the first day of early voting.

nader to run for president

while i dont agree with libertarian-esque policies all the time, due to their lack of support for the underprivileged and under-represented, nader is in my mind clearly a great independent thinker who tends to have the betterment of society a top his list. his battles with corporations and his progressive ideas are much needed. it would be great for america to have a debate with mccain, obama, ron paul and nader discussing the issues in a raw and real conversation. it would surely expose our populous to wider array ideas and show that our world is not separated into black and white (or more appropriately red and blue). we need to keep incorporating fresh and different ideas into our political realm, because clearly we have not found any real answers yet...

nader could really push the democratic candidates to firm up some policy issues and try to gain more support form the progressive crowd that he will find support in.

i hope his choice works out for the best.

this link is a transcript from a DemocracyNOW! interview with nader from a few months ago before he officially entered the race. he makes some great points...
