"Our culture, self-toxified by the posionous by-products of technology and egocentric ideology, is the unhappy inheritor of the dominator attitude that alteration of consciousness by the use of plants or substances is somehow wrong, onanistic, and perversely antisocial. I will argue that suppression of shamanic gnosis, with its reliance and insistence on ecstatic dissolution of the ego, has robbed us of life's meaning and made us enemies of the planet, of ourselves, and our grandchildren. We are killing the planet in order to keep intact the wrongheaded assumptions of the ego-dominator cultural style. It is time for change."

fully agree
great explanation for humanity creating its own apocalypse. we have so long undermined our opportunities for growth that we are ready to pull the final cord on our very existence. in some sense, the very belief in disastrous "end times" is the fulfillment of our alienation...
also, the suppression of the "mentally ill" via institutionalized hospitals and zombifing drugs is totally counter-productive as well as immoral.
in days past, shaman we revered for their ability to access other dimensions and feel the subtle energies of the universe. now we suppress those who access other realms ('schizophrenics') and remind them that pain and suffering are 'real' rather than the auditory hallucinations they 'experience.' (mind you terrence mckenna was a self-diagnosed schizophrenic...)
