"Aliens/hoaxers also need pi"
"Pi Day is a time to honour not just a number and our fascination with it, but also the essential truth that there are some things we simply cannot know. We can only get close to knowing."

--While I'm not sure how much i'll be doing to celebrate Pi Day, I can say that I enjoy the idea of people accepting "the essential truth..." Perhaps we (CERN) don't need new super accelerators? Or maybe we do, i dunno...but apparently the architects behind crop circles, whether aliens or hoaxers, need this crazy long number.
"The most recent attempt, by a Japanese computer scientist in 2002, found 1.24 trillion digits of pi."

Article may not be worth your time, I think I grabbed the stuff worth reading and threw it here...but, i might have missed something that you would like so...

A Global Democratic Movement Is About to Pop

" The movement has three basic roots: the environmental and social justice movements, and indigenous cultures' resistance to globalization - all of which are intertwining. It arises spontaneously from different economic sectors, cultures, regions, and cohorts, resulting in a global, classless, diverse, and embedded movement, spreading worldwide without exception. In a world grown too complex for constrictive ideologies, the very word movement may be too small, for it is the largest coming together of citizens in history."

" Inspiration is not garnered from litanies of what is flawed; it resides in humanity's willingness to restore, redress, reform, recover, reimagine, and reconsider. Healing the wounds of the Earth and its people does not require saintliness or a political party. It is not a liberal or conservative activity. It is a sacred act."

'Hey, Are You Going To Burning Man?'..... How About Electric Apricot?

who's gonna catch this flick with me at the lyric cinema? it's only playing 10-13th.... so wed. @ 9 or thurs. @ 9 before jeff austin... ??
Directed by: Les Claypool

Suuuuuumary: A young graduate filmmaker from UCLA set forth to make a documentary reflecting an element of contemporary music culture that had yet to be fully examined. The notion was to capture something raw and original. He searched for something unpretentious and genuine, yearning to make a film that would stand out from other music documentaries and potentially redefine the genre. Who he found was a band called Electric Apricot; what he achieved was enlightenment. Unexpectedly in searching for enlightenment, the duality of existence was unveiled. Electric Apricot has been kicking around the peripheral of the Jam scene for several years now and is comprised of four colorful characters that take themselves far too seriously. Bellowing the anthem “Hey, Are You Going to Burning Man?” the band has recently been offered some opportunities that could potentially break them through to levels beyond their dreams, and our young filmmaker is there to document the rise. He follows them from nightclubs to the recording studio and eventually on the road to the Holy Grail of West Coast music events, a festival aptly named “Festeroo,” where the tie-dye flows and the Hula-hoops twirl.

Animals as Food
The dominant global culture of eating meat ensures that farmed animals are the most exploited animals on earth. The routine brutality of farming them for food causes more individual suffering than any other human practice and abuse and cruelty are synonymous with the meat production process. Our habit of eating animals is a powerful and tangible example of how alienated we are from the way our food is produced. In 2003 the number of land-based animals killed for food worldwide was 52.7 billion and that does not include non slaughter deaths (that is death due to injury whilst there) and underreporting of figures from smaller countries. Eating animals hides behind assumptions that animals which are not human are incapable of suffering. We are somewhat hypnotised into believing things are not as bad as they really are. A slaughter house becomes a meat eating plant, dead bodies becomes meat, chickens become poultry, sheep become mutton and so on. To justify meat eating, consumers want to believe the killing process is a sanitised and humane affair. It is not possible in this day and age to take farmed animals from birth to death without inflicting suffering. If you treat slaves humanely, does this make slavery justifiable. The government is solidly behind the meat industry and puts profit before social good and the general public interest. Our south african government is more concerned with animals being dead than wheN they are alive. For farm animals life is an eternal hell.

Chickens are produced for two kinds of food: Eggs and meat. In SA they are the most consumed animals and have been for many years. In 2003 the number of chickens slaughtered was 545 million. These animals are genetically engineered to grow unnaturally fast so that they become big, meaty and breasty. This laces a huge strain on their undeveloped limbs, causing painful cripling and deformities. Their bones are unable to form properly, often do not calcify and remain soft cartilage. Now because of this their little legs bend or break under their unnatural weight and so they cannot even get to the water in their sheds. They are dying like this but antibiotics are given to them to promote growth and keep them alive long enough to make it to slaughter. To keep production costs down, the animals are given the bare minimum needed to survive. The happy farmyard scenes painted on egg boxes or in TV ads for meat and dairy products are marketing creations, the reality of modern farms is very different. Huge, dark, stinking sheds are crammed full of miserable animals, who never breathe fresh air or see natural daylight other than during transport to a market or slaughterhouse. They can hardly stretch their wings or legs and will never be able to roam freely. They often have to stand, and lie down in, their own waste. Farmed animals are treated as though they are stupid and unfeeling, but they experience pain, discomfort, fear, loneliness and frustration in exactly the same way as all animals do, including humans. Most farmed animals are slaughtered at just a few months old.

Female pigs (sows) are subjected to an endless cycle of pregnancies to produce as many piglets as possible. The majority are forced to give birth and feed their young in cages known as furrowing crates, which prevent them from moving freely. After three or four weeks, the piglets are transferred to barren, concrete pens. At around six months of age, they are killed by having their throats cut. Pigs in factory farms suffer from boredom, frustration and health problems, such as lameness and viral infections. Contrary to popular belief, they like to keep themselves clean, which is impossible in the filthy conditions in which they are forced to stay.BIRDSIn the wild, chickens like to dust-bathe, turkeys fly considerable distances, and ducks spend most of their lives on water. But in poultry farms, thousands are crammed together in dark sheds, unable to express their natural instincts. The birds are fattened up so quickly that their legs may not be able to carry the weight of their own bodies. Each year, millions die from thirst and hunger because they collapse and are unable to drag themselves to the food and water units. Broiler chickens reared for meat spend the whole of their short lives crammed inside sheds. Others die from suffocation and crushing. Broiler chickens reared for meat spend the whole of their short lives crammed inside sheds. © Animals’ Agenda

COWS and THE TRUTH ABOUT MILK
Dairy cows produce milk only after giving birth. To keep up the supply, they are kept in a constant cycle of being made pregnant and then having the baby taken away so that the milk meant for their calf can be sold for human consumption. The calves are essentially a waste by-product. Separation is extremely distressing for both mother and baby. Dairy cows are so over-milked that most milk producing cows suffer painful infection of the udders, which causes traces of pus and blood to leak into the milk (a certain amount of pus per liter is allowed as infection is standard) . By five years old, they will be too worn-out to produce the quantities of milk required and are killed. The female calves are kept to replace the worn out cows and male calves are either killed or sold for ‘veal’ (calves eaten for their tender pale flesh).

Eggs and the ‘free range myth’
Egg-laying hens are a different breed from the chickens kept for meat production (known as ‘broilers’). Most eggs today come from battery farms where four or five hens are packed into tiny cages, barely bigger than a microwave oven. The EU has banned battery cages from 2012 but the containers they propose to replace them with, called ‘enriched cages’, are not much better. Some hens are kept in barns and although uncaged, the conditions are still filthy and overcrowded. Millions of ‘useless’ day-old male chicks are gassed or shredded alive because they can’t lay eggs and, being the ‘wrong’ type of chicken, won’t grow enough meat to be considered profitable.

The ‘Free-range’ myth
‘Free-range’ is a very misleading term - the animals are still usually reared in small living spaces with restricted access to the Outdoors. Organic production is more to benefit humans who do not want to consume pesticides and antibiotics. Organic and free-range animals might have a slightly better quality of life than those who are intensively reared, but they still die a bloody death at the slaughterhouse.

Animals are now being genetically selected and manipulated to produce more milk, more meat and more babies.
• Battery hens lay 20 times more eggs than they would naturally
• Dairy cows produce ten times more milk than their calves would ever require. This causes painful infections of the cows’ teatsResearch is constantly carried out to increase ‘output’ - as measured by the volume of milk, the number of babies born and the speed at which they can be fattened for slaughter. This drive towards increased ‘efficiency’ is pursued regardless of the consequences for the animals’ own health or welfare.

So I was watching the Colbert Report the other night and Steven Colbert started talking about this guy who had a genius idea for a website. I thought it was hilarious. Apparently ladies can go to this site, sign up for an account, and raise money from random men to get an enhancement surgery. I guess guys can sign up and chat with the ladies and decide how much they want to contribute. What do you guys think?

4'33" @ Langerado...Was it Played?

Black Mountain College was one of the most fabled experimental institutions in art education and practice, launching a remarkable number of the artists who spearheaded the avant-garde in America.

Operating in a relatively isolated rural location with little budget, Black Mountain College inculcated an informal and collaborative spirit, and over its lifetime attracted a venerable roster of instructors. Some of the innovations, relationships and unexpected connections formed at Black Mountain would prove to have a lasting influence on the postwar American art scene, high culture, and eventually pop culture. Buckminster Fuller met student Kenneth Snelson at Black Mountain, and the result was the first geodesic dome (improvised out of slats in the school's back yard); Merce Cunningham formed his dance company; and John Cage staged his first happening.

RAGE FROM YOUR FUCKING HEART

ZNet

ZNet is a "community of people committed to social change." Their website is wholly amazing and deserves hours and hours of exploration. Again, in the words of Chomsky:

We live in an era of media concentration, vast efforts on many fronts (political, economic, military, ideological) to insulate state and private power from critical discussion or even popular awareness, and to reduce citizens to isolated atomized creatures restricted to satisfying personal 'created wants.' This massive and coordinated campaign has been partially successful, but only in a limited way.

The range and scope and dedication of popular activism has also increased, all over the world, reaching a level of international solidarity and mutual support that has never been seen before. The basic conflicts are very old, but they have taken quite dramatic and significant new forms, and the stakes are far higher than ever before. It is, regrettably, no exaggeration to say that the survival of the species is at risk -- and many others with it. We all know why.

The popular movements are the hope for a decent future. They of course have to have access to information and modes of interaction. In addition to alternative print and video, to a very large extent they have relied on the internet, which allows people to escape from the constraints of the doctrinal systems, to explore and investigate and discuss crucial issues with one another, to plan and organize.

Z Magazine and ZNet have played a crucial role in serving all of these functions. I see that every day. I travel and speak constantly, in the U.S. and abroad, and spend many hours a day just responding to inquiries and comments. I constantly discover that the people and organizations I come in contact with are relying very substantially on Z projects for information, discussion, and opportunities for interaction and organizing, to an extent that is quite remarkable. Z is also an invaluable resource for me personally, in all of these respects, and also in my case for providing a forum for intense and very constructive discussion, the only one I regularly participate in. And for posting articles, interviews, commentaries, etc., of mine. I know that many others have very much the same experience.

It is of inestimable importance, in my judgment, that Z and ZNet, now composing the new ZCom with their various other projects such as their growing video efforts and incomparable summer school, arguably the most exciting and instructive I have ever encountered.

Again, I do not think it is possible to exaggerate the stakes. I hope that all of us who are committed to resisting and reversing the powerful currents of reaction and oppression and violence, and showing that another world is indeed possible, will contribute as best we can to ensure that the remarkable achievements of Z and ZNet will be carried forward.

Zeitgeist

I was reading the biographies of people involved with Haramein's resonance project as Emissaries and this dude Michael Hey has something very profound to say that i started feeling after dozemay's talk about Loose Change.

I highly recommend the biographies of all these very inspiring folks (including yimie yanover), but this quote really stood out:

"In recent years I have been very active in the 9/11 Truth Movement. I have a strong reaction to perceived injustice and I'm very concerned about the effect that such a grand lie can have on the soul of a society. On the positive side, I feel that exposing the lie will a have a cathartic healing effect as it will help prepare us for the great transformation that is about to take place. My work within the movement has allowed me to understand what it can be like to share new ideas - especially unpopular ones. It has also taught me the extent to which human beings are capable of clinging to dearly held yet utterly incongruous beliefs, leading me to re-evaluate my entire belief system."

My studies in government have tweaked me out beyond belief and i was speaking with one of my teachers the other day about this never-ending feeling of chaos and catastrophe on the horizon...she put it this way...maybe it is metaphor, maybe it is real...either way there is something in the near future that has to do with a change in the world and perhaps in yourself...keep riding these waves

we've got this shit, couldn't have asked for a cooler time...much love, light, and have a wonderful florida shred!

THE INTERNET

40 year desert "day-tripper"

moses looks pretty heady....

"He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible."

"Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances."

I Created It!!!!

the Internet is a global communications network linking computers around the world. It was created in 1969 as ARPANet (Advanced Research Projects Agency) for the U.S. Department of Defense. The network was designed to break information into separate packets and send the packets over various routes from computer to computer, rerouting the information as necessary to circumvent the breakdown or failure of parts of the system.

A graduate of Oxford University, England, Tim Berners-Lee, in 1989, a scientist at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, had suggested a way to let all users, but particularly scientists, browse each others’ papers on the Internet. He developed a code known as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and a protocol known as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) that could be implemented on any computer. He also developed a Universal Resource Locator (URL) system for naming, locating and retrieving documents, pictures, and other media over the Internet. Using the URL system, a user could retrieve data from newsgroups, FTP sites, and Gopher pages, as well as other types of sites. And the beauty of HTML was that it also contained the instructions for formatting the information on a page, no matter what computer the user happened to be running.

In 1991, Berners-Lee, using the system he had developed, launched the World Wide Web Berners-Lee made his idea available freely, with no patent and no royalties due. He decided that their standards must be based on royalty-free technology, so they can be easily adopted and innovated by anyone. He gave it to the public domain, upon creation.

Terraforming Mars

seriously?
Highlights:

"Such an effort to colonize Mars would begin with altering the current climate and atmosphere to more closely resemble that of Earth's. The process of transforming the Martian atmosphere to create a more habitable living environment is called terraforming."

"Here are three terraforming methods that have been proposed:
Large orbital mirrors that will reflect sunlight and heat the Mars surface.
Greenhouse gas-producing factories to trap solar radiation.
Smashing ammonia-heavy asteroids into the planet to raise the greenhouse gas level."

"While we may reach Mars this century, it could take several millennia for the idea of terraforming to be fully realized. It took the Earth billions of years to transform into a planet on which plants and animals could flourish. To transform the Mars landscape into one that resembles Earth is not a simple project. It will take many centuries of human ingenuity and labor to develop a habitable environment and bring life to the cold, dry world of Mars."

A few weeks ago Calhoun performed with Yonder Mountain String Band at Raleigh, NC’s Lincoln Theatre and, on Friday, she joined the Disco Biscuits for a handful of songs at Sayreville, NJ’s Starland Ballroom. 100 Billion Served

On February 22, 2008.

Skype’s 276 million registered users around the world have now talked with one another for more than 100 billion minutes (100,000,000,000) using free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls since Skype launched in 2003.

This mind-boggling number equates to one minute of free talk for every man, woman and child that has ever walked the Earth!

To put this into further perspective, Skype has only been in business for about 4.5 years (approximately 2,365,200 minutes). Yet people have used Skype to talk for more than 69,444,444 days (more than 190,258 years). Go back 150,000 years, if a woolly mammoth and a sabre-toothed tiger had started talking for free on Skype, they would still be chatting away today… and with 40,258 years to go!

It took McDonald’s nearly 40 years to serve 100 billion hamburgers (from 1955 to 1994). And it’s taken Skype just over four years to hit the 100 billion free minutes mark which is pretty amazing!

For even more perspective on this milestone, check out the Skype Blog

Did This Woman Just Steal From Me?

Ms. Dewey appears to be an interactive search assistant who audibly comments on searched keywords. Definatly not a better webpage than google, but a fun try, so i had a go. Immediatly this bitch takes out her pad and starts making the "i know why your searching for this" look and writing shit down in it. so i decided to take her for a trip through my head, not looking at the pages i searched, but only paying attention to the responses she gave; of course there are easter egg responses to the most obvious searches, like "boobs" but lets be honest boobs wasnt the worst thing i searched for; but i swear it felt like she was looking through my mac pro cam and data mining me for smart business and governmental intelligence...i did some further investigating and found Microsoft started Ms. Dewey, i hate you Ms. Dewey. actually im down it just feels wierd when they try to make that act of "the user in his underwear on the couch surfing the web" a personal human experiance, ill stick with google and its classic bar for now. Ms Dewey is def worth a go however

What Would V Say?

Hive-Mind Megacomputer

A hundred years ago, companies stopped generating their own power with steam engines and dynamos and plugged into the newly built electric grid. The cheap power pumped out by electric utilities didn’t just change how businesses operate. It set off a chain reaction of economic and social transformations that brought the modern world into existence. Today, a similar revolution is under way. Hooked up to the Internet’s global computing grid, massive information-processing plants have begun pumping data and software code into our homes and businesses. This time, it’s computing that’s turning into a utility.

Ryclying ideas to steer Space Ship Earth

Is is possible to live off the grid in modern civilization? Imagine a home that is powered by renewable energy, collects its own water, grows its own food, and is made from 100% recycled materials. The architect Mike Reynolds has proved thats is more than imaginable. HE calls his idea and his company Earthship Biotecture. An Earthship is a truly sustainable home designed to collect its own energy, food, and water, and defuse all its waste on site.

Yeah, Cool but can you cook with it? YES

And earth ship will even harvest methane from your waste and turn it into energy. Check out more food for thought on the Earthship site. http://www.earthship.net/

This is quite a picture. Makes you wonder what was going through their mind as they took it.

This is a fantastic photo!! Amazing that the film was still good - or memory stick. Either one, this really tells the story. Look at how high that wall of water is!!!!!!

½ a second before tsunami

This picture was taken on the banks of Sumatra Island (the height of waves was of approx. 32 m = 105 ft).
It was found saved in a digital camera, 1 ½ years after the disaster.

We cannot know for sure,
but very likely the one who took the picture is not alive any more (it was just a matter of seconds).
Today we can see the last image he/ she saw before ending life on Earth!

SONG

The weight of the world
is love.
Under the burden
of solitude,
under the burden
of dissatisfaction

the weight,
the weight we carry
is love.

Who can deny?
In dreams
it touches
the body,
in thought
constructs
a miracle,
in imagination
anguishes
till born
in human--

looks out of the heart
burning with purity--
for the burden of life
is love,

but we carry the weight
wearily,
and so must rest
in the arms of love
at last,
must rest in the arms
of love.

No rest
without love,
no sleep
without dreams
of love--
be mad or chill
obsessed with angels
or machines,
the final wish
is love
--cannot be bitter,
cannot deny,
cannot withhold
if denied:

the weight is too heavy

--must give
for no return
as thought
is given
in solitude
in all the excellence
of its excess.

The warm bodies
shine together
in the darkness,
the hand moves
to the center
of the flesh,
the skin trembles
in happiness
and the soul comes
joyful to the eye--

yes, yes,
that's what
I wanted,
I always wanted,
I always wanted,
to return
to the body
where I was born.

Lateralus

With my feet upon the ground I move myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin
I'm reachin' up and reachin' out, I'm reachin' for the random or
Whatever will bewilder me, whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind, we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been

This is sort of in response to what has been discussed in dozemay's post below. this to me is whats really really really really really really important.each of us when we open up to whatever you want to call it is being pushed toward good.certain activities certainly catalyze this experience.never doubt your creative intution.its working toward good.its all working toward good

Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind

My biggest struggle these days is denying my intuition because of a system of thought...an operating system you could say...we have the tools to tap into the internet (metaphorically)...they're everywhere...screaming at us

Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come

i've helped protect 6840 sq. ft. of rainforest! yay!! i wonder how many frogs i've saved?
So, help me save the rainforest guys.... 11.4 sq ft at a time :)

How to Save the Rainforests

This is from a website, www.enn.com, which is good. The things talked about in this article, are not

What the fuck do we do?

what the fuck do we do?

max and i went to see the Loose Change Final Cut at the Oriental last night. first of all, the movie fucking sucked. it was a conglomeration of the evidence pointing towards the likelihood of 911 being an inside job, yet they decided to not take a stand on the issue. they presented the info and fizzled out with a weak and almost apathetic conclusion. while a point can be made for the importance of people making their own inferences, if people are going to travel around the country in order to show these paradigm shattering pieces of information, than they better fucking take a stance and use their media disseminating power to create a community of people who want change. after the movie there was no call to action, no attempt to bring people together...instead a "thanks for coming, buy a beer to support the venue."

i watched Zeitgeist for the second time when i got home because i was searching for a more solid view of the situation at hand and i needed the zeitgeist rhetoric to get under my skin again. that movie is the shit. while it is extreme and unnerving, it takes no prisoners. it is a holistic presentation, it is a call to action, a call to connect, a call to open our collective eyes. the quotes at the end of the movie are amazing, enlightening, positive and serve to bring people together. Ram Dass' quote about the lack of an 'other' is exactly what we need to be hearing: we are in this together and we are inexplicably tied to each other and to nature. Bill Hicks' quote about the dream like nature of life/reality is liberating and brings the end of the movie to a point where an answer begins to become somewhat visible: dream a better reality.

the government perpetrated 9/11 against its citizens in order to further its political agenda of greed and power. the government perpetrated 9/11 against its citizens in order to further its political agenda of greed and power. holy shit. this is huge, this is bigger than anything i've read in a history book. we are living during the craziest explosion of life, information and oppression that i can imagine. what matters? what is going to school, traveling, going to shows, smoking pot, playing? what is our life compromised of when we are embedded in the most elaborate life-strangling lie ever created?

WHAT THE FUCK DO WE DO? WE HAVE TO STAND UP. HOW CAN WE OVERCOME THIS EVIL? HOW DO WE ACCELERATE THE DREAM OF A BETTER EXISTENCE?

I whole-heartedly encourage all of you who haven't seen Zeitgeist to watch it immediately.
This is an amazing article that serves as a necessary grain of salt to accompany the move.

I have no idea how we can overcome this. Positivity is awesome but I need something to sink my teeth into. I need a way to focus my intellect to make a real change. Fuck the slow cycles of oppression. What do we do? Suggestions?

I know we can do this. I'm done participating in the murdering liberty stripping paradigm that is everywhere. It's time to get angry and make a real change in our lives and the lives of others.

EU fines Microsoft record $1.4bn
Windows software

The European Commission has fined US computer giant Microsoft for defying sanctions imposed on it for anti-competitive behaviour.

Microsoft must now pay a record 899m euros ($1.4bn; £680.9m) after it failed to comply with a 2004 ruling that it abused its position.

The ruling said that Microsoft was guilty of not providing key code to rival software makers.

EU regulators said the firm was the first to break an EU anti-trust ruling.

The fines come on top of earlier fines of 280m euros imposed in July 2006, and of 497m euros in March 2004.

"Microsoft was the first company in 50 years of EU competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision," Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.

Future improvements?

An investigation concluded in 2004 that Microsoft was guilty of freezing out rivals in products such as media players, while unfairly linking its Explorer internet browser to its Windows operating system at the expense of rival servers.

The European Court of First Instance upheld this ruling last year, which ordered Microsoft to pay 497m euros for abusing its dominant market position.

DISPUTE TIMELINE
March 2004: EU fines Microsoft 497m euros and orders it to release key Windows code to rival software developers
September 2004: Microsoft tries to have the ruling temporarily suspended
April 2006: Microsoft appeals the ruling in the European Court of First Instance
September 2007: Microsoft loses its appeal

Last week, the firm announced that it would open up the technology of some of its leading software, including Windows, to make it easier to operate with rivals' products.

"As we demonstrated last week with our new interoperability principles and specific actions to increase the openness of our products, we are focusing on steps that will improve things for the future," Microsoft said.

Further cases

But the firm is still being pursued by Brussels.

Last month, the European Commission launched two new anti-competition investigations against Microsoft into similar issues.

The first will look at whether there are still problems regarding Microsoft abusing its dominance of the PC market to grab market share of the internet.

The Commission will also investigate the continued interoperability of Microsoft software with rival products.

have we lost our connection?

When I was learning about evolution in my high school biology class someone posed an interesting question. Have humans stopped evolving because we no longer need to change to fit our environment? This is a thought that reenters my mind at times and I find it to be a valid question. Due to current technology we no longer have a need to adapt to fit our environment, in fact we do exactly the opposite, we change our environment to suit our needs. If the weather were to begin to get drastically colder, there’s no need for our bodies to evolve and start growing fur again to keep us warm, we can simply put on a synthetic jacket if we need to go outside. Otherwise we can sit in our heated houses by the gas fireplace or if we absolutely must go somewhere we can start our cars and let them run for a while to warm up while we wait in the warmth inside. We no longer need to adapt to the changing of the weather and we don’t have to adapt to find food either since we now control our food sources. We plant the crops we need and if there may be a problem with them, science has come up with some chemical we can spray on them to ensure their survival through almost any condition. Same with meat sources, no need to worry about those running out when we can keep thousands of cows stacked upon one another without having to worry about disease because there are plenty of antibiotics to take care of that. It seems like we’ve finally done it, we’ve beaten nature and no longer need to adapt to fit in with nature, we can create our own environment that is much more stable and dependable…But is that really what we want to do? Have we completely lost touch with nature? In a lecture the other day my professor was talking about the hurricane in South East Asia in the 90s that caused a huge tidal wave. He talked about how relatively few animals and indigenous people were harmed, yet thousands of other people died. The indigenous people who still rely heavily on nature for their survival knew how to read the signs that nature was sending and knew they needed to get to higher ground. They also saw that the animals were acting strangely, another sign of trouble. The animals seem to be the most in touch with nature, they can sense shifts in things like atmospheric pressure and know when it’s time to take action in one form or another. On the Titanic people in the lower decks knew which direction to run from the water because it was the direction the rats were running purely on animal instinct. We have these notions that we are a highly sophisticated and advanced society, yet it is the “primitive” indigenous people and animals that have maintained a connection with nature. They seem to have an alliance with nature rather than trying to conquer it. Where would we be without our watches and our weather forecasts and our air conditioning? We have the technology to do all these amazing things, to try and predict tsunamis, earthquakes, blizzards…but what happens if this technology fails us? Think about a power outage, think about the blackouts that happened in New York City that shut down a city and caused massive chaos. Have we lost every natural instinct? Are we connected with the natural environment at all anymore? Or have we become so sure of ourselves and our new ideas in this technological revolution that we’ve lost any connection with mother earth that we once had? While it may seem more advanced to keep all our records electronically rather than carving them into stone, isn’t it a lot easier to erase a hard drive than to wipe clean a carving? These are just some questions I’ve been thinking about lately, unfortunately I don’t have any answers but sometimes it scares me to think how disconnected from the earth we have become and I’m left wondering if we have any chance of reestablishing that connection before it is lost forever.

Brown Ends Tuition for Lower-Income Students

Bridging the gap...one Ivy League University at a time. However, if your family makes 101,000 dollars a year, it looks like your parents have to shell out half that for your tuition. In Australia, higher education is paid for by the government, and as soon as you start making 30,000 dollars a year, you must start paying them back. if you never make 30 grand in a year, you never pay for college. The loophole of course is to travel abroad and make your money there, never filing tax returns in Aussie, never notifying the government that you've been making enough money to help pay for YOUR education. It seems to be a little bit immoral and unproductive, considering the money has to come from somewhere and if nobody ever pays them back, the money would eventually run out. However, who knows how i would handle a situation like that, but either way, a good idea in theory (the pre-paid education, that is...)

Undisclosed detention centers

Since 9/11, and seemingly without the notice of most Americans, the federal government has assumed the authority to institute martial law, arrest a wide swath of dissidents (citizen and noncitizen alike), and detain people without legal or constitutional recourse in the event of "an emergency influx of immigrants in the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs."

Beginning in 1999, the government has entered into a series of single-bid contracts with Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) to build detention camps at undisclosed locations within the United States. The government has also contracted with several companies to build thousands of railcars, some reportedly equipped with shackles, ostensibly to transport detainees.

Using Nuclear Power to Get Gas

Bill Reinert, who helped design Toyota's Prius hybrid, hovers in a helicopter 1,000 feet over Fort McMurray, Alberta.

On this clear November morning, he's craning for a look at one of the world's largest petroleum reserves where there's not an oil well in sight.

Instead, in a two-mile-wide pit below, trucks head to refineries with loads of sand weighing more than Boeing 747s. Yellow flames shoot skyward as 900-degree heat liquefies any embedded petroleum.

Via Cryptogon:

As bad as this seems, this is just a preview.

I could be wrong, but my guess is that asymmetric operations against the energy companies will begin if the insane decision is made to go with nuclear power to provide the heat necessary to recover the oil from these deposits.

There are a lot of people who are one notch away from throwing their bodies onto the gears of the machine. It’s only a fraction of fraction of one percent, but that’s all you need to cause billions of dollars worth of damage in an asymmetric battle space.

It’s tough to imagine a more insane use of technology than using nuclear power to eat the earth in order to keep spewing carbon into the air, but here we are.

$740 billion mortgages at moderate to high risk of failure - Bank of America

WASHINGTON — Over the last two decades, few industries have lobbied more ferociously or effectively than banks to get the government out of its business and to obtain freer rein for “financial innovation.

But as losses from bad mortgages and mortgage-backed securities climb past $200 billion, talk among banking executives for an epic government rescue plan is suddenly coming into fashion.

Dear lord! rioters!! get the water cannons!!

Texas Republicans worked overtime to make it harder for key Democratic voting groups to vote and be represented fairly. The redistricting games they played are infamous. And for the Prairie View A&M University precincts, they put the voting place more than seven miles from the school.

So what did the students in this video do? They shut down the highway as they marched seven miles, chanting Obama, to cast their votes on the first day of early voting.

nader to run for president

while i dont agree with libertarian-esque policies all the time, due to their lack of support for the underprivileged and under-represented, nader is in my mind clearly a great independent thinker who tends to have the betterment of society a top his list. his battles with corporations and his progressive ideas are much needed. it would be great for america to have a debate with mccain, obama, ron paul and nader discussing the issues in a raw and real conversation. it would surely expose our populous to wider array ideas and show that our world is not separated into black and white (or more appropriately red and blue). we need to keep incorporating fresh and different ideas into our political realm, because clearly we have not found any real answers yet...

nader could really push the democratic candidates to firm up some policy issues and try to gain more support form the progressive crowd that he will find support in.

i hope his choice works out for the best.

this link is a transcript from a DemocracyNOW! interview with nader from a few months ago before he officially entered the race. he makes some great points...
